08 06 2010My afternoon art time was mostly spent working on the quilt I showed you on the floor yesterday. Today was spent sewing all the squares together; measuring it and realizing I had miscalculated and it was much too small still to be considered twin size; cutting and sewing the first border to the quilt, and now ruminating about the color of the outer, second border (with fabric yet to be purchased-no lengths big enough in my stash). So, while doing this, I realized two things. One: sewing straight lines is nice and relaxing, and doesn't take much thought at all. Two: Sewing straight lines is pretty boring and is why I don't make "traditional" quilts very often any more! With the time left in my day set aside for making art, here is what I've accomplished (sorry to be redundant!): Setting up for more rusting, either for the current WIP, or another to follow. I had dreams last night of a grid pattern made by rusting my coveted hack saw blade, and so here is stage 1:
Hacksaw blade on already rusted fabric. Small round washer shapes are not actually there, but are being seen through the fabric to the plastic bag on the other side. Add your comment |
08 05 2010Well here's a diversion from my regular quilt work! A simple, traditional quilt, to be made fast, for my son's girlfriend to take back to college. A home made keepsake for memories of the summer. Not the most complex piece I've ever done, but a lot of work just the same! The parameters: Pink fabrics (well, with some blues and others...there's only so much pink I can take in one place), simple squares, arranged, and balanced. Nothing is sewn together yet, and there's still a border to be thought about (later, later), but here is a preliminary (ok-final-I can't put much more thought into the arrangement) arrangement of squares and colors. Once sewn together, each square will have an embroidery floss tie in the center to "quilt" it, with some nice warm pouffy batting in between.

Here are the results of the past 2 days of rusting this piece to go with the orange and blue piece already started. I am loving the hacksaw blade imprint. These photos show it still on the pan, just after taking the metal off, without rinsing. Once rinsed, more of the delicate rusting details and marks show up, so that will have to be for tomorrow, once it's dried. But, you get the idea!
Here, the left side was rusted and the right side prepared.
Both left and right sides, before rinsing. Add your comment08 03 2010Wallpaper Pattern Repeat IV. Art Card. Oil pastel rubbings of vintage batik printing block over previously flour crackle dyed fabric. Free motion quilted. About 5 x 5 inches.

I've decided the orange and blue piece I've been working on needs another piece, and so on to rusting this one to make it feel one with the others. This time around (so far), it's more washers, some steel wool, and a long lost hacksaw blade unearthed during some "summer cleaning"! The colors in this piece are a bit browner and greener, but the screen print is from the same printing session, so I think once rusted, it will all come together.
