Welcome to my first ever blog entry!  This seems to be a good place to tell you about new things I've been working on. It has rained every day of this past week here in Connecticut, so the yard has exploded with color and growth and GREEN.  This piece of printed fabric I was using last week in my sewing group has evolved into this little quilt I decided to call Flora.

I was hoping to get her done in time to submit her as an entry to the Small Art Quilts juried show in Groton, New York, but alas, it's not in the cards this year!

Here is a closer detail:

The background fabric is a hand dyed silkcreen, over which the image of Flora (photo transfer) was stitched.  I used some pieces of fabric I had rusted last year to cut into "petals" to applique onto the quilt. Then it was all free motion machine stitched.  At the last minute, I decided to add the grapevine frame.  The whole piece is around 6.75 inches wide by 11.5 inches high, not including the grapevine "frame".

I have repeatedly used this photograph I took of this sculpture (Cedar Hill Cemetery, Hartford, CT) in various art quilts and art cards.  Something about her expression makes me want to use this image in quilts about mythological women.  But, I think it's time for me to find some new sources of imagery.  If anyone knows of good places in Connecticut (or New England, I love to travel!) to photograph sculptures like this, please This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
